Astro Fairy is a longtime client of mine. I’ve helped her with many different things over the years. When I need to get out of my head, I go to Ellwood. This stretch of bluffs along the coast in western Goleta has trails through open grasslands and small paths that wind down to a wide beach, where you can find driftwood forts and views out to the Channel Islands. At its north end, a eucalyptus grove is home to winter roosts of monarchs. I have happy memories of wandering through the trees with a group of preschoolers in rainboots. When the sun broke through the clouds, dozens of the monarchs and their orange wings descended from the branches…

Today is a profoundly sad day. Russia’s aggressive action is heartbreaking for the death, suffering, and economic turmoil it will cause in Ukraine and, indirectly at least, beyond. Here at Rick Steves’ Europe, we hope that a diplomatic solution can be found and peace will return to that fragile and long-suffering part of our world. Our mission at RSE is to help Americans better know and understand our neighbors through travel. But when we bring travelers to another country, we also bring their dollars — dollars that would support Putin’s aggression. Therefore, as of today, we have canceled all…

Tarot Card Reading: The Chariot This week’s tarot card pulled from our deck is The Chariot. Bold. Undeniable. Unstoppable. In our featured image, a lynx drives The Chariot. The Lynx doesn’t second-guess. It waits, it watches, and when the time is right? It moves. That’s your energy now. If you want the dream: the promotion, the move, the partner, the new car or house, now is the time to chase it with everything you’ve got. This isn’t the week to flirt with your goals. It’s the week to court them with action. Make a focused plan. Stick to it. Distractions will…

It was with a sense of loss that we left the Land Cruiser behind on Cyprus last summer. Still numb from Coen’s brain cancer diagnosis (read about it here), and with him just out of the hospital – part of his head shaved, stitches crisscrossing where the tumor had been removed – we drove through Nicosia in a daze, on a goose chase from one office to the next. Two full days in forty-degree Celsius heat, stuck in unattractive, barren offices with no air conditioning (not that we have any in the Land Cruiser either), sorting out paperwork so the…
