For many older adults, getting a good night’s sleep is a nightly struggle. Up to 20% of older adults deal with insomnia, which leaves you tired, grumpy or at risk for bigger problems like depression or heart trouble.1 Many turn to sleeping pills for help, but they often bring side effects like grogginess and confusion. Could something as simple as exercise be the answer? Researchers recently looked at dozens of studies to figure out which types of exercise help older adults with insomnia sleep better — and they found a surprising winner: strength training.2 Let’s explore what they discovered, why…

Hi friends! Happy Friday! What are you up to this weekend? It’s our performance of Carmina Burana with the symphony – I can’t wait!! – and Liv also has a dance competition. In between that, the weather is supposed to be a lil chilly (for Tucson) so I’m hoping for a low-key and cozy Saturday. I hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead. I mentioned a while ago that we’ve been *in it* over here for quite a while. The solution for now has been to withdraw P from school and start homeschooling on Monday to finish out the year.…

The Internal Revenue Service issued a reminder Thursday that individuals and businesses in certain disaster-declared areas have until May 1, 2025, to file their 2024 federal income tax returns and make tax payments. The automatic extension applies to taxpayers in parts of twelve states affected by federally declared disasters in 2024. The IRS emphasized that taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to receive this relief. “If a taxpayer’s address of record is in a disaster area locality, individual and business taxpayers automatically get the extra time without having to ask for it,” the IRS stated. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Patents can be a hidden cost trap for startups. While they seem like a one-time expense, the reality is different. Filing is just the beginning. A single U.S. patent can exceed $50,000 over its lifetime as legal fees, government fees, international filings and annuities after issuance stack up. No wonder founders hesitate, questioning the ROI. I’ve seen it firsthand; many are skeptical and unsure if patents are worth the investment. But skipping patents altogether can be even worse: A competitor files first, locking you out of your own market An investor loses…

TAMPA, Fla. — Raven Johnson’s eyes grew wide and her jaw dropped. “She said that? Is that real?” She called her teammate Sania Feagin over and pointed to the tweet shown on a reporter’s phone: “Look at this!” While Johnson was playing a team-high 27 minutes to lead her South Carolina Gamecocks to a Final Four victory over Texas, perhaps the greatest WNBA player of all-time was heaping praise on her. A senior guard for the reigning national champs, Johnson tallied two points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 74-57 win over Texas in the national semifinals…

TAMPA, Fla. — The complaints could not be ignored. From Birmingham, Alabama, to Spokane, Washington, last weekend, some of the most prominent coaches in women’s college basketball took aim at the NCAA’s fairly-new double-regional format. First to loudly voice his disapproval with the format — where eight teams play a total of six games in the span of four days in one arena — was UConn coach Geno Auriemma, the 71-year-old Hall of Famer who owns 11 national championships. Auriemma’s protests were focused around the availability of court time for practices and shootarounds, which he argues impacts rest and recovery…

Drug-resistant gonorrhea, a form of the widespread sexually transmitted infection, is considered an urgent health threat worldwide. The United States has just lost its ability to detect it. Among the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employees fired on Tuesday were 77 scientists who, among other work, gathered samples of gonorrhea and other S.T.I.s from labs nationwide, analyzed the genetic information for signs of drug resistance, and readied the samples for storage at a secure facility. No other researchers at the agency have the expertise, or the software, to continue this work. The abrupt halt has stranded about 1,000 samples…
